Dexia layoffs & Sprint Nextel layoffs

Dexia has three billion U.S. dollars loss and plans to lay off 900 people
News on January 30, 2009: Fabius Dexia bank said that the loss in the fourth-quarter reached about 2.3 billion euros (about three billion U.S. dollars). Moreover, the company said as a part of reorganization, the company would lay off 900 people in 2009 and close operations in several countries.

The third largest U.S. operator Sprint announced to lay off 8000 people
News on January 26: according to foreign media reports, the United States third largest mobile operator Sprint Nextel announced to lay off about 8000 employees so as to further reduce costs and ward off economic recession.

Sprint Nextel said the layoff would involve all levels of staff and reduce the annual cost of 1.2 billion U.S. dollars. The company plans to pay 300 million U.S. dollars for severance pay.

Jamaica St Ann Bauxite Company announced to lay off employees
News on February 1, 2009: St Ann Bauxite Company Limited currently announced to lay off 150 employees in the first quarter of 2009, which accounted for about 20% of the total number. The company pointed out that as the global economic crisis and the unprecedented downturn in demand, as well as decline of bauxite and alumina prices, the layoff measures must be taken.

Digg plans to lay off about 10 percent
USA news aggregator site Digg CEO Jay Adelson on Thursday issued a statement in the official blog that this website would take measures to lay off employees. Digg spokesman said the company would lay off about 10%, but did not disclose specific figures. At present, the total number of employees is 75. Digg also pointed out that the site plan to reduce costs and achieve profitability in 2009; in addition, the site would recruit employees to set up a direct sales team.

SAP said that although layoff cost would produce a negative impact on profit margins this year, it would save about 350 million euros for SAP every year since 2010.
