Chemical giant Basell considers an application for bankruptcy protection
According to informed sources, the world’s third largest independent chemical company Lyondell Basell Industries told to creditors on Monday that because of the decline in sales and the impact of tight cash, the company is considering filing for bankruptcy protection. The source said the Netherlands-based LyondellBasell have a large number of American business, it has hired legal counsel for bankruptcy and told to their creditors that the company tries to their effort to get bankruptcy financing for 2 billion U.S. dollars. The company may apply for bankruptcy protection according to the Chapter 11 of “Bankruptcy Law”.

Chi Mei layoffs in January 2009
Chi Mei Optoelectronics plans to lay off 3% -5% of the employees on January 26, about 800 people
On Jan. 2, according to Taiwan media reports, Chi Mei Optoelectronics recently indicated that the management of Chi Mei Optoelectronics announced that because of the economic impact of winter, the demand for LCD panels has been weakened, so the company consider to lay off 3% -5% of its employees.
At present, according to Chi Mei Optoelectronics, there are about 17,000 full-time employees, so there are about 510-850 people being laid off.
